Ernst

Ernst is a male Western Lowland Gorilla who died on September 20, 2017. He lived to 45 years of age.

Born in Cameroon in 1972, he was wild-caught as an infant. His parents were both wild gorillas.

Ernst’s life in captivity began at Copenhagen Zoo in November 1974, when he was just two years old. After several months in Denmark, he moved to Royal Rotterdam Zoological Gardens in June 1975, where he spent nearly three decades. In March 2004, he transferred to Bioparc Fuengirola in Spain, where he lived out his final years until his death in 2017.
