Western Lowland Gorilla at Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens, born 2014.
Western lowland gorillas face extinction in the wild, with fewer than 100,000 remaining across their African range. Enzi represents one of the captive-born males helping to maintain genetic diversity in managed populations across North America. His parents, Pele and Bolingo, produced him at Busch Gardens Tampa in December 2014.
For nearly a decade, he grew up within the Tampa troop structure. Captive-born gorillas like Enzi develop under careful observation from keepers who monitor their social integration and physical development. His subspecies, Gorilla gorilla gorilla, carries the IUCN’s most urgent conservation classification: Critically Endangered.
Early 2024 brought a major change when he transferred to Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens. At nine years old, he joined a new social group as part of the coordinated breeding program that manages gorilla populations across accredited facilities. Such moves help ensure genetic diversity and appropriate group dynamics as young males mature.
