Born in Gabon to wild parents, Cola entered captivity as an infant. His early years took him through several facilities, including a brief stay at an unknown institution and time with a private owner in 1982.
From September 1982 until August 2014, he lived at Centre de Recherches Médicales Franceville for over three decades. In August 2014, Cola moved to his present home at Projet Gorille Fernan-Vaz, where he has spent the last decade of his life.
