Charlie, a 30‑year‑old male western lowland gorilla, has spent his whole life at Zoo Atlanta.
A silverback born on 7 June 1996, he entered the world in the very same zoo where he still thrives. His mother, Banga, and father, Ozoum, were both part of the Atlanta troop, giving him a solid family foundation from day one.
Over three decades, keepers have watched him mature into a strong, confident presence in the group. His critical‑endangered status adds weight to every day he spends educating visitors about his subspecies, Gorilla gorilla gorilla.
At 30 years old, Charlie remains one of Zoo Atlanta’s longest‑resident great apes. The continuity of his environment provides a rare glimpse into the life cycle of a captive‑born western lowland gorilla.
