Caroline

Caroline was born at the Centre de Recherches Médicales de Franceville on 16 September 1983, the daughter of Typhen and Etoumbi. She spent the first three decades of her life at the research facility where she was born.

In August 2014, she moved to Projet Gorille Fernan-Vaz, where she has lived for the past decade. At over 40 years old, she represents an important part of the captive population of her subspecies. Her species, Gorilla gorilla gorilla, carries the IUCN classification of Critically Endangered.

Born into managed care, Caroline has lived her entire life within conservation facilities in Gabon. She has experienced two transfers during her four decades, moving from her birthplace to her current home when she was already 30 years old.
