Western Lowland Gorilla at Limbe Wildlife Centre, born 1993.
Western lowland gorillas face extinction in the wild, with fewer than 100,000 remaining across their African range. Born in Cameroon on 3 June 1993, Brighter came into the world as the daughter of wild gorillas during a period when her subspecies was already under severe pressure from habitat loss and hunting.
She spent her early years in her birth country before making the transition to Limbe Wildlife Centre in May 2003. At nearly ten years old when she arrived, she had already passed through the critical early development stages that shape a young gorilla’s social understanding and physical capabilities.
Now over three decades old, Brighter represents the resilience of her critically endangered subspecies. Her presence at Limbe Wildlife Centre connects visitors to the urgent conservation challenges facing Gorilla gorilla gorilla throughout Cameroon, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, and the Republic of the Congo. The IUCN’s Critically Endangered classification reflects the ongoing threats that continue to impact wild populations across Central and West Africa.
