A male western lowland gorilla who moved from Zurich to South Africa as a juvenile in 2010.
Bonsenga represents one of the captive-born males helping maintain genetic diversity in managed populations worldwide. Born at Zoo Zurich in September 2001, he spent his first eight years in Switzerland as part of the breeding program there.
His parents, Nache and N’gola, contributed to what would become an international conservation effort spanning continents. The young gorilla’s early years in Zurich provided crucial socialization within an established troop structure before his eventual transfer.
In January 2010, he made the journey to the National Zoological Gardens of South Africa, where he has lived for over a decade. The move represented part of the coordinated management of this critically endangered subspecies across global zoo networks. Now in his early twenties, he has become an established member of the South African facility’s gorilla program.
