Western Lowland Gorilla at Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens, born 2005.
Western lowland gorillas face extinction in the wild, with fewer than 100,000 remaining across their African range. Bolingo represents hope for his critically endangered subspecies through managed breeding programs that maintain genetic diversity in captivity.
The son of Kishina and Cenzoo, he spent the first eighteen years of his life at Busch Gardens after his birth in November 2005. Those formative years shaped his development from infant to adult silverback, a process that unfolds over nearly two decades in gorilla society.
Early 2024 brought a major transition when he transferred to Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens after spending his entire life at one facility. Such moves are carefully planned to support breeding recommendations and social dynamics within the species survival program.
At nearly nineteen years old, he has reached full maturity as a western lowland gorilla. His subspecies, Gorilla gorilla gorilla, remains one of the most endangered great apes on the planet, making every individual crucial for long-term conservation efforts.
