A 38‑year‑old western lowland gorilla, Binti Jua, delights visitors at Brookfield Zoo.
When a tiny infant clung to her mother at the Columbus Zoo, her future already felt extraordinary. She left that birthplace after just over two months, traveling to the San Francisco Zoological Society where she spent the bulk of her early childhood. In 1992 she arrived at Brookfield Zoo, a home she has called her own for more than three decades.
Her lineage traces back to mother Lulu and father Sunshine, both part of the captive breeding program that keeps the western lowland gorilla species thriving in managed care. The subspecies, Gorilla gorilla gorilla, carries a Critically Endangered status on the IUCN Red List, making every survivor a crucial ambassador for conservation.
Now 38 years old, she moves through the exhibit with a calm confidence that reflects years of enrichment and social learning. Keepers note her steady presence during feeding times and the way she engages with younger group members, reinforcing the social bonds essential for gorilla troops. Her longevity and health are a testament to the dedication of the staff at Brookfield Zoo and the broader network of institutions caring for this endangered great ape.
