Betsy

Betsy is a female Western Lowland Gorilla who died on October 5, 1971. She lived to approximately 7 years of age.

Born in Africa in 1964, she was wild-caught rather than born in captivity. Both her parents were wild gorillas.

Betsy spent her captive life at the Los Angeles Zoo & Botanical Gardens, where she died from hydatidosis. Her short life reflects the challenges faced by many wild-caught gorillas during that era of zoo management.
