She lived 40 years, moving from Lincoln Park to Brookfield, back to Lincoln Park, then to Denver before her passing.
A western lowland gorilla named Bassa entered the world on 23 July 1977 at Lincoln Park Zoo, the daughter of Lenore and Otto. From the start, she was a captive‑born animal, and her early years were spent under the care of the staff there until the winter of 1987. A brief transfer to Brookfield Zoo followed in December, before returning home to Lincoln Park in June of the same year. Nearly eight years later, the familiar halls of her birthplace welcomed her again until 1996, when a final move took her to Denver Zoo.
For more than two decades, Bassa lived in Denver, a home that held her until her death on 21 March 2018. Her lifespan of 40 years underscores the longevity possible in managed care, even as the species remains Critically Endangered in the wild.
She was a testament to the dedication of zoos in caring for endangered great apes, and her story reflects the complex history of captive‑born western lowland gorillas across North America.
