Western lowland gorillas face extinction in the wild, with fewer than 100,000 remaining across their African range. Born at Mefou Primate Sanctuary on 20 April 2013, Bahrat entered the world as part of this critically endangered subspecies. His parents, Jasmine and Bobo, were part of the sanctuary’s managed population.
Captive-born gorillas like Bahrat represent hope for species preservation through careful breeding programs. The IUCN lists Gorilla gorilla gorilla as Critically Endangered, making every birth meaningful for conservation efforts.
Bahrat’s life was brief. He died at Mefou Primate Sanctuary on 1 September 2013, just over four months after his birth. His short time contributed to our understanding of gorilla development and care in managed settings.
