A captive‑born male western lowland gorilla, Azizi entered the Warsaw Zoological Garden’s troop in late summer 2008 after spending his early years at Zoo Z rich. His mother Sandra and father N’gola provided the foundation for his early development, and keepers have watched his growth from infant to a mature silverback.
Now 26 years old, he remains a staple of the Warsaw group, contributing to the species’ critically endangered status awareness. The zoo’s staff note his steady presence among the other gorillas, a reminder of the importance of long‑term care in conservation breeding programs.
His lineage is a small but vital thread in the global effort to sustain western lowland gorillas, a subspecies listed as Critically Endangered by the IUCN. Each day he helps illustrate how managed populations can support the survival of a species teetering on the brink.
Azizi’s story began on 17 May 2000, and after more than eight years at his birth facility, the transfer to Warsaw on 27 August 2008 marked the start of his current chapter. He continues to thrive under the watchful eyes of his caretakers, embodying the resilience of his species.
