A wild-caught western lowland gorilla who found sanctuary after an unknown early history.
Wild-caught gorillas carry stories we may never fully know, and Avishag’s early years remain largely a mystery. Born somewhere in Africa, she was taken from her natural habitat before eventually finding her way to Mefou Primate Sanctuary, where she lives today.
Her journey to sanctuary involved at least two relocations, though the details of her initial capture and early placement are not documented in available records. What we do know is that she represents one of countless western lowland gorillas whose lives were disrupted by human activity.
At Mefou Primate Sanctuary, she has found stability after whatever challenges marked her earlier years. The sanctuary provides care for primates who cannot be returned to the wild, offering them as natural an environment as possible given their circumstances.
As a member of a critically endangered subspecies, her story reflects the broader crisis facing Gorilla gorilla gorilla populations across Central and West Africa. Fewer than 100,000 western lowland gorillas remain in the wild, making every individual important for the species’ future.
