Western Lowland Gorilla at Limbe Wildlife Centre, born 2009.
Western lowland gorillas face extinction in the wild, making every birth in managed care precious for the species’ future. At Limbe Wildlife Centre in Cameroon, Atinbi entered the world on 3 March 2009, born to parents Akiba and Chella.
Captive-born gorillas like her represent hope for a subspecies that the IUCN lists as Critically Endangered. She has spent her entire life at the same facility where she was born, growing from infant to adult female under the care of the Limbe team.
Now fifteen years old, Atinbi has reached full maturity within her natal group. The centre where she lives works directly with gorilla conservation in Central Africa, making her part of both local and international efforts to protect Gorilla gorilla gorilla for future generations.
