Western Lowland Gorilla at Ogrod Zoologiczny w Opolu, born 1992.
Western lowland gorillas face extinction in the wild, with fewer than 100,000 left across their African range. Ashmar represents one of the captive-born males helping maintain genetic diversity in European zoo populations. His parents, Annette and Ernst, produced him at Royal Rotterdam Zoological Gardens on a cold January day in 1992.
For thirteen years, he grew up within Rotterdam’s gorilla troop. Captive-born gorillas like Ashmar learn essential social behaviors from their mothers and group members during these formative years. The transition from infant to juvenile to adult male happens gradually under the watchful eyes of keepers who document every stage.
In May 2005, he made the move to Ogrod Zoologiczny w Opolu in Poland. Nearly two decades have passed since that transfer, making him one of the zoo’s most established residents. His subspecies carries the full scientific name Gorilla gorilla gorilla and holds Critically Endangered status according to the IUCN.
Now over thirty years old, Ashmar has spent most of his adult life in Poland. Each captive western lowland gorilla contributes to conservation efforts for a species under severe pressure from habitat loss and hunting across Central and West Africa.
