Western Lowland Gorilla at Cheyenne Mountain Zoo, born 1992.
Western lowland gorillas face extinction in the wild, with fewer than 100,000 remaining across their African range. At Cheyenne Mountain Zoo, one member of this critically endangered subspecies has called the facility home for more than thirty years. Born on October 5, 1992, she came into the world as the daughter of Juju and Barney.
Captive breeding programs for Gorilla gorilla gorilla represent crucial conservation efforts for a species under severe pressure from habitat loss and hunting. She has remained at the same zoo throughout her life, growing from infant to adult female within the same troop structure where she was born.
Now in her thirties, Asha represents one of the older females in managed gorilla populations. Her longevity speaks to the care provided by her keepers and the stability of her environment over three decades.
