Western Lowland Gorilla at Loro Parque, born 1998.
Western lowland gorillas face extinction in the wild, with fewer than 100,000 remaining across their African range. Alladin represents one success story in the global effort to maintain genetically diverse populations in managed care. Born at Zoological Center Tel Aviv-Ramat Gan on July 4th, 1998, he was the offspring of Anya and Lukas.
His early years were spent in Israel, where he developed under his mother’s care until age seven. In September 2005, he made the journey to Loro Parque in Spain’s Canary Islands. This transfer marked a significant transition from his birthplace to what would become his long-term home.
Nearly two decades have passed since his arrival at Loro Parque. He has grown from a juvenile into a mature silverback, reaching his mid-twenties in an environment designed to support his subspecies’ complex social needs. His species carries the IUCN designation of Critically Endangered, making every captive-born gorilla like him valuable for conservation efforts.
Today he continues to thrive at Loro Parque, where his presence contributes to ongoing research and education about his endangered subspecies. The years have transformed him from a young gorilla born in the Mediterranean region into an established member of Spain’s gorilla population.
