Alika, a 10‑year‑old western lowland gorilla, has spent her whole life at Sedgwick County Zoo.
A playful presence in the western lowland gorilla troop, Alika was welcomed by keepers on 3 August 2016. Her mother, Barika, and father, Matumaini, helped raise her in the familiar surroundings of Sedgwick County Zoo. Growing up under close observation, she has become a familiar face to visitors and staff alike.
At ten years old, she embodies the species’ gentle strength, moving confidently through the enrichment-rich habitat. The zoo’s team monitors her health and behavior, ensuring she thrives in a setting designed to mirror her natural environment. Her daily routine includes foraging puzzles, social play, and occasional quiet moments perched on her favorite branch.
The western lowland gorilla, classified as Critically Endangered by the IUCN, relies on captive programs like this one to maintain genetic diversity. Alika’s continued well‑being contributes to those broader conservation goals, while she simply enjoys the routine of her home troop.
