Alafia

Alafia is a female Western Lowland Gorilla born on November 30, 1990, at Woodland Park Zoo. She is the daughter of Nina and Pierrot, both of whom were part of the same breeding program. Her early years were spent at Woodland Park, where she remained from birth until she left on January 6, 2009.

After leaving Woodland Park Zoo, the studbook records show no official location for her until she arrived at Audubon Zoo on March 1, 2018. That nine‑year interval is undocumented in the transfer history.

Since joining Audubon Zoo, she has integrated into the herd and participates in daily enrichment activities. Her presence offers visitors a chance to learn about western lowland gorillas and the conservation challenges they face in the wild.

She continues to be a well‑known member of the Audubon Zoo community, contributing to educational talks and feeding demonstrations that highlight the species’ behavior and needs.
