In June 2026, after several months of declining health, Riverbanks Zoo announced that their beloved western lowland gorilla had passed away, leaving behind an unforgettable legacy.
🌿 A Life That Began in Chicago

Cenzoo was born in 1996 at Lincoln Park Zoo in Chicago. As part of the accredited zoo conservation program, he later lived at Denver Zoo, Busch Gardens, and Birmingham Zoo before arriving at Riverbanks Zoo in 2015 as a mature silverback ready to lead his own family.
👶 A Proud Father
During his years at Riverbanks, Cenzoo became the father of ZaKota and Moyo—the first successful gorilla births in the zoo’s history. Visitors watched him grow into a patient and protective father, offering a rare glimpse into the gentle side of silverback leadership.

Today, both sons live together in a bachelor troop at Dallas Zoo, continuing their father’s legacy.
👏 The Famous Side-Eye
Keepers often shared stories about Cenzoo’s personality. They said he sometimes tested new staff, doing just enough to earn his reward before seeing if he could negotiate for more. If a meal was taking too long, he’d deliver his trademark side-eye followed by a loud clap that let everyone know he was ready to eat. 😄

Beneath that playful attitude was a devoted protector. Staff described him as always watching over his troop, carefully investigating anything he considered unusual—from unfamiliar Christmas decorations to enrichment items that resembled wiggly snakes or oddly scented bugs. Nothing escaped his attention.
🩺 A Difficult Goodbye

Over several months, animal care staff noticed subtle changes in Cenzoo’s appetite, activity level, and mobility. A CT scan performed with a veterinary specialty clinic revealed fluid in his abdomen and a mass near his colon, findings consistent with either bowel cancer or a serious abscess.
After consulting veterinary specialists, the difficult decision was made to humanely euthanize him, preventing further suffering when recovery was no longer considered possible.
🕊️ Remembering Cenzoo
Riverbanks Zoo remembered Cenzoo as a calm, confident leader who always put his family’s well-being first. Following the announcement, visitors and longtime supporters shared heartfelt memories, photos, and tributes celebrating the silverback they had admired for years. 💚

🌍 A Lasting Legacy
Cenzoo’s legacy extends far beyond the record books. Yes, he became the father of Riverbanks Zoo’s first successful gorilla births, but he also showed countless visitors the quiet strength, patience, and responsibility that define a great silverback.

Rest easy, Cenzoo. 🦍 Your family was always safe with you watching over them.
