Bo is a male Western lowland gorilla born at the Pittsburgh Zoo & Aquarium on May 11, 2023. His mother is Moka, and his birth represents an important contribution to the conservation of this critically endangered species. Bo was named in honor of his late grandfather, Mimbo, who lived at the zoo until 2005. He has an older brother named Frankie and lives with his mother Moka in one of the zoo’s two gorilla family troops.
Bo shares his birth year with Charlotte, a female gorilla born at the zoo in February 2023, and together they have brought new excitement to the zoo’s gorilla program. The two babies reside in separate family groups but can see each other with their respective troops, mimicking the natural social dynamics found in the wild. Bo and his family are sometimes visible to zoo guests, as the eight resident gorillas rotate between indoor, outdoor, and behind-the-scenes areas.
