Berani, a beloved 32-year-old Sumatran orangutan at the Denver Zoo, passed away in September 2025 due to end-stage kidney failure.
Berani gained international fame for his rare role as a devoted single father to his daughter, Cerah, after his mate Nias died in 2020. This intense caregiving behavior is highly unusual for male orangutans.
He was known for his calm, gentle spirit and resilience, even participating willingly in his medical care until the compassionate decision was made to euthanize him to prevent suffering. His legacy continues through his daughters and the valuable scientific knowledge gained from his care, which will benefit orangutan conservation and veterinary medicine globally.
