Alizeti is a baby chimpanzee at Sedgwick County Zoo, born on August 20, 2023. Her name means “sunflower” in Swahili. She was born to chimpanzee Chuckie, but since Chuckie did not exhibit appropriate maternal behavior, Alizeti has been human-assisted reared. This involves round-the-clock care that mimics how a chimp mother would naturally care for her infant. The caretakers keep her closely held for at least a couple of months until Alizeti is developmentally ready to be reunited with the troop, where she will then be raised by a foster mother with support from the chimpanzee family. As of several months old, Alizeti has made great progress, reached milestones, and transitioned to spending more time with other chimpanzees in the troop.
