Akida is the youngest chimpanzee at Wellington Zoo in New Zealand. He was born in November 2021 and is approaching 4 years old as of 2025. Akida is part of the chimpanzee troop at Wellington Zoo, where He is known for exploring and playing with enrichment items provided by the keepers. He has been observed play-wrestling and exhibiting behaviors that show chimpanzees’ sense of humor and social interaction skills. Akida is part of one of the largest chimpanzee troops in Australasia. His presence is vital for the social dynamics of the group, providing opportunities for other chimpanzees to practice parenting and social skills. As an ambassador for his species, he helps the zoo educate visitors about the threats chimpanzees face in the wild, such as habitat loss and the illegal pet trade.
