Addo is a male western lowland gorilla born at Utah’s Hogle Zoo on May 30, 2024. His name, pronounced “ah-doh,” comes from the African Ga language of Ghana and means “King of the Road.” Addo’s mother is Pele, and his father is Husani. Addo has shown strong and healthy development milestones such as crawling, climbing, and starting to eat solid foods like twigs and greens. He has also been observed holding tight to his mom and becoming more comfortable with his environment. The gorilla troop at Hogle Zoo, including Addo, is stable and calm. Addo’s birth represents a significant contribution to the conservation of critically endangered western lowland gorillas, threatened by habitat loss and poaching. The zoo encourages supporting gorilla conservation through programs like recycling old electronics to reduce mining impacts on gorilla habitats. Addo has also been seen interacting with his father and sister Georgia under close care by zoo staff.
