Aarde is a baby Western Lowland gorilla at Chessington World of Adventures & Zoo. He was born on April 24, 2022, to mother Shanga and father Damisi, both part of the Chessington gorilla troop. Aarde is one of nine gorillas in the troop, which includes adults, teenagers, and other babies. Western Lowland gorillas are the smallest and most widespread subspecies of gorilla, native to Central and Western Africa, and are critically endangered. Aarde has been featured as an adorable baby gorilla, often seen playing and exploring his surroundings at the zoo. The troop is led by the silverback Damisi, and includes breeding females and younger gorillas in various life stages.
